Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is Microsoft's implementation of NetBIOS Name Service (NBNS), a name server and service for NetBIOS computer names.
WINS is broken into two parts, a Server Service (that manages the encoded Jet Database, server to server replication, service requests, and conflicts) and a TCP/IP Client component which manages the client's registration, renewal of names and takes care of queries.
This SonicWALL signature identifies legitimate WINS traffic. This detection is based on a UUID found during an RPC call. Due to the lack of documentation, it is not always possible to determine the exact version of an application based on UUIDs. Please see the "Microsoft RPC End Point Mapper" signature(s) for more information. |
