This SonicWALL IPS signature category contains IPS signatures that identify network traffic to and from Social Networking sites using web browsers, web applications, and stand-alone software clients. A social networking site allows individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within the bounds of its autonomy, articulate a list of users with whom to share information, and view lists of connections make by others within the system. They do this by providing a broad range of communications technology that includes blogging, photo and video sharing, games, quizzes, location-based information, mobile and standard telephony, instant messaging, texting and more. There are currently thousands of Social Networking sites that support a wide range of interests and practices—maintaining pre-existing social networks, helping strangers with shared interests connect. Some are based on political views, common language, shared racial, sexual, religious, or national identities.

There are security risks associated with allowing users to connect to social networking sites that put personal and corporate data at risk that include identity theft through social engineering, liability from employee personal information, as well as viruses, spyware, and malware linked to from the social networking site.
